What an amazing moment, now memorialized in this kapa moe–sunrise on Haleakalā with the magnificent silversword (he ʻahinahina) backlit by the rising sun!

He ʻahinahina—my favorite plant/ flower on this Earth! This small unremarkable succulent thrives and grows for upwards of ninety years in the arid desert environment of Haleakalā. Then in a spectacular finale, the plant shoots this eight-to-twelve-foot plume of spectacular flowering blooms. How spectacular the wonders of our Hawaiian places! Haleakalā with he ʻahinahina is at the top of my list of favorites.

More amazing–Hawaiʻi has two species of silversword! The less-celebrated and smaller ʻahinahina is found on Mauna Loa on Hawaiʻi Island–where Queen Liliuokalani ventured on horseback.

Every quilt has a story. He Wanaʻao o Haleakalā is no exception. I have written the full tale of the quilt, and I am happy to share it with you.

The quilt is SOLD. Mahalo
