In 1887, while attending Queen Victoriaʻs Golden Jubilee in London, Liliuokalani purchased a butterfly brooch, made of 159 diamonds and two ruby eyes. This beautiful treasure of jewelry is worn by the Queen in every official portrait—either in her hair or pinned upon her breast.

Today, the Queen’s butterfly brooch is part of the treasures of Iolani Palace, where it identifies and commemorates Hawaii’s Queen. The Queen’s butterfly brooch is a hallmark of Hawaii’s beloved monarch. Treasured by Hawaii’s people, Queen Liliuokalani forever inspires and guides her Hawaiian people.

Never before portrayed in a Hawaiian quilt, The Queen’s Butterfly Brooch makes a significant contribution to Hawaiian quilting and to the legacy of Hawaii’s Queen.

Every quilt has a story. He Wanaʻao o Haleakalā is no exception. I have written the full tale of the quilt, and I am happy to share it with you.
